The 308 was the first in the successful series of mid-mounted, vee-eight engined Ferrari road cars with sparkling performance and phenomenal road holding. It was aimed at the market in which the Porsche 911 had such a strong foothold.

The first 308's, introduced in 1976, were the GTB (Berlinetta) version - the first 200 cars having fibreglass bodywork. Within two years a change to steel bodywork had been made and a GTS (Spyder) version was added. The 308 was a success; the exceptionally pretty Pininfarina bodywork and the transversely mounted vee-eight engine, free-running, apparently unbeatable yet docile in traffic, gave the car instant appeal.

The quest for more urge came soon; firstly the four Weber 40 DCNF carburettors went in favour of fuel injection, then four valves per cylinder were introduced (Quattrovalvole or QV). In 1985 the engine capicity was increased from 2,927cc to 3,185cc, the bodywork received detailed restyling and the car was re-designated the 328 to reflect the 3.2 litre engine.

More radical change created the 348 when the engine capacity was again increased (to 3,405cc), the engine was turned through ninety degrees in the chassis to become fore and aft mounted, and an impressive 286bhp was produced at 7,200rpm. A new body appeared simultaneously, designed by Pininfarina.

This 348 has had one owner since new and is thought to have covered only 12,000km - he took delivery on 17 January 1991. It is finished in Ferrari red with tan leather trim and is in "as-new" condition. It is fitted with a radio, CD player and air-conditioning. It comes with manuals, tools and servicing invoices.
