Lot Essay

The attribution to Herman Rode of Lübeck was made by Professor Paul Pieper in a letter dated 25 July 1978. Ludwig Meyer has subsequently suggested, on the basis of photographs, that the handling in the figure of Saint Peter the Apostle places this work in the Silesian School centred in Breslau (now Wroclaw). The gilt ornamental framing, which appears to be original, supports this view.
