Lot Essay

The decoration of this wine cooler is inspired by Messrs. Stalker and Parker's Treatise on Japanning of 1688. An early example of a japanned wine cooler is in the collection of the Duke of Beaufort at Badminton (R. Gentle & R. Feild, Domestic Metalwork 1640-1820, Woodbridge, 1994, p. 45, c.pl. 18 and p. 318, fig. 3) and a related example was sold from 'Millden - A Scottish Lodge', Christie's London, 20 January 2005, lot 361A (£16,200).

The distinctive rocaille handles are related to those on mahogany wine coolers of the period, including that from the collection of the Hon. Simon Sainsbury, Christie's London, 18 June 2008, lot 106.
