Lot Essay

The mark is that of the Royal Palace of Versailles. Because of their simplicity it is likely that these candlesticks were made for secondary apartments or for the menus-plaisirs. There is an entry in the Journal du Garde-Meuble for the 15th September 1772:
.
It is of course impossible to prove that the above description from the Journal du Garde-Meuble pertains to the above pair, but it does substantiate that even minor items were sometimes stamped with the interlaced V mark.
