cf. E. Irvine Bray, Paul Flato Jeweler to the stars, New York, 2010 for more information on Flato and p. 142 for gold envelope cases in a comparable style.

Paul Flato was one of the most successful jewelry designers of the 1930s and '40s and in his heyday was as famous as Tiffany & Co. His designs were favored by Hollywood stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo and Rita Hayworth, who wore them on and off the set. Flato was close friends with Elizabeth Arden, the legendary cosmetics tycoon. The present set, with its playful imagery, is typical of Flato's work. Each silver case is dedicated and inscribed to Arden through the clever use of replicating a letter written to her. The design of the small purse containing the cosmetics set was patented in Flato's name in 1938.
