It is interesting to note that the cuvette is inscribed "Presented to Francis Valentine Keesling by the Scottish Rite Temple Association of San Francisco as a token of esteem and in appreciation of many valuable services rendered December 1st 1914". The Scottish Rite is a Masonic organization and is one of the two branches of Freemasonry in which a Master Mason may proceed after he has completed the three degrees of Symbolic or Blue lodge Masonry.

Francis Valentine Keesling was born in 1877 and was a very successful lawyer graduating from Stamford University in 1898. Keesling had a very prominent career in Masonry. He was a member of the York and Scottish Rite Masonic organizations and was Master of the California Lodge and Grand Master of California.
