Lot Essay

This watch, purchased by the present owner in 1998, is from Cartier's celebrated Tortue series. The tonneau-shaped "tortue pattes" or "turtle-on-legs" wristwatch was originally designed by Louis Cartier in 1912. The shape of the case was made to resemble a turtle, a very popular animal during this era and symbol of good fortune and longevity in many civilisations. Particularly elegant it became one of Cartier's most prized watch designs.
