The shape of this censer is inspired by archaic ritual bronzes Ding vessels from the Shang and Zhou periods.
It was generally part of a five-piece altar set comprising a Ding shape censer, two candlesticks and two flower vases.
The rare incised mark suggests that it was made in the Imperial Palace Workshop located within the Forbidden city in Beijing
See a similar censer bearing Qianlong six-character incised mark, of same shape and same design sold in our New York Rooms, 17 September 2008, lot 190
