With its chimerical 'griffon' supports, evoking the triumph of the Arts of Peace, this jardiniere reflects ths influence of Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778). A closely related plinth for an urn in the Villa Albani, Rome - dedicated to that 'Maecenas' of the arts William Beckford and no doubt the inspiration of this jardiniere stand - featured in Piranesi's Vasi, Candelabri, Cippi, Sarcophagi, Tripodi, Lucerne, et Ornamenti Antichi Disegni, 1778.
