Lot Essay

The interior of this cylinder bureau bookcase with its ratcheted writing slope and arrangement of pen-trays and pigeon holes relates to a design by Thomas Sheraton in his Cabinet-Maker's and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1791-94, plate 2.
The foliate cast handle with central patera is a known Gillow's model, illustrated in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Appendix D, p. 335, plate b.
