Lot Essay

A similar saucer-dish and a mug with the same half-portrait are discussed in Cyril Cook, The Life and Work of Robert Hancock, London, 1943, item 55 and item 56. See also Aileen Dawson, The Art of Worcester Porcelain 1751-1788, Masterpieces from the British Museum collection, London, 2007, pp. 154-5, no. 60. The portrait is adapted from an engraving by Richard Houston after a painting by Antoine Pesne which commemorates the military successes of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia (1712-1786).
