Lot Essay

Hendrik Frans van Lint was one of the most accomplished and sought-after vedutisti working in Rome in the first half of the 18th century. Born in Antwerp, he trained briefly under Pieter van Bredael (between 1696 and 1697), before travelling to Rome in 1700, where he spent the rest of his life.
A similar view of The Colosseum and Arch of Constantine by van Lint was offered at Christie's London, on 26 March 1971, lot 72. The view of the Baths of Caracella is more unusual; this would appear to be the only instance that van Lint painted this subject.
