Ronald Davis was born in Santa Monica but grew up in Wyoming. He attended the San Francisco Art Institute in the early 1960's, when Abstract Expressionism was the prevailing movement of the time and an influence on his work. Davis' monochromatic shaped canvases of this period were hard-edged, geometric and optical in style. Looking for new materials to develop his ideas about painting, Davis started to experiment with resin and fiberglass in the late 1960's, creating an illusion of transparency with different layers of color.
