HOPI HU KACHINA
Cottonwood root with raffia, cotton string, canvas, brass tacks, human hair and dyed horse hair. Representing Hu kachina, the whipper. Carved with semicircular feet and arms bent close to body, wearing a red horsehair skirt with canvas belt attached with brass tacks. Black body paint is embellished with two horizontal white dashes on upper arms and either side of chest and back. Case mask with pop eyes and a carved zigzag band of teeth below which is attached a horsehair beard, sewn onto canvas and attached with nails. Upward curving horns are attached with string and banded in white and a bird track is painted on the forehead. Atop the head is a ring of twisted raffia wrapped in string and sewn to the head.
