Lot Essay

Although very likely made for the French market, this lavish service was probably not ordered by Madame de Pompadour, as traditionally believed. It is quite doubtful that Madame de Pompadour would have allowed the connection with her somewhat bourgeois former name, Poisson. For a further discussion, see Howard and Ayers, op. cit., vol.
