Lot Essay

By the time this sweeping view of the hongs of Canton was created the subject had been favored for about seventy-five years, rendered in various media, sizes and levels of quality. The waterfront development that this grand mid-century picture so scrupulously depicts speaks volumes about the inexorable march of Western influence over the China coast in this period.
