Lot Essay

See D.S. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, p. 221, where the author remarks that the coordination between Chinese modelers and European metalworkers "...shows the sophisticated planning behind such fine Private Trade." A very similar snuffbox, but with Chinese scenes, was sold Christie's London, 11 May 2004, lot 88.
