Finely painted with a Dutch fisherman standing on a riverbank holding a pole, two baskets at the foot of an old tree and two birds flying overhead, the rim with four Chinese landscape panels in gilt, grisaille and iron-red reserved on a cell diaper ground

Lot Essay

This finely rendered scene is after the Dutch painter Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651) of Utrecht, who specialized in history painting as well as rural landscapes. Hervouet & Bruneau (op. cit., p. 66) note that "...it is exceptional to see [this subject] in colored enamels."
