Lot Essay

Thomas Pitt, founder of the 18th century political dynasty, famously sold a 127-carat diamond to the Regent of Orlèans that became the most precious stone in the Royal Crown of France. Later he was Governor General of Jamaica; his son was made Earl of Londonderry. See Howard, op. cit., vol. I, p. 176.
