Lot Essay

These plates and the Pitt dish in lot 276 all from the first known Chinese Imari armorial service, as discussed by Howard (op. cit., p. 36), where he notes that the arms and crest of the Pitt service, as typical in this early period, are incorporated within a wholly Chinese design.
