Lot Essay

The women whose small Tanka boats operated as taxis for hire in the waters of Canton, Whampoa and Macao were known, according to P. Conner, "for their cheerful disposition and their well-maintained craft" (The Hongs of Canton, pp. 270-71), and became a much-favored subject of China Trade artists.
