Lot Essay

Both made of dramatically figured maple, this tall chest and the dressing table in the following lot have family histories in the Cooper family of Haddonfield, New Jersey. The pieces may have been made for James Cooper (1720-1789), who married Mary Jessup (1737/8-1794) in 1764 and on this chest, the history of ownership is recorded on a paper label.
