Lot Essay
Born in 1770, Mahlon Dickerson served as governor of New Jersey 1815-1817. He subsequently represented New Jersey in the Senate and served as Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. The present service is documented as having been used by Dickerson when he entertained President Martin van Buren (president 1837-1841) and the rest of his cabinet at Dickerson's home, 'Ferromonte', near Succasunna, New Jersey.
