Lot Essay

This rare form of jug or sauceboat appears to be based on Chinese originals. Several hundred such blue and white export examples were recovered from the Nanking cargo wreck, which sunk circa 1750 on its way to Europe (see The Nanking Cargo, Christie's Amsterdam, 28 April-2 May, 1986, lots 4066-4130).
