Lot Essay

The present portrait, undoubtedly painted in Rome, dates to circa 1635 and relates closely to a number of unfinished portraits by Bernini, such as the Self portrait (Madrid, Prado) and Portrait of Virginio Cesarini (Koelliker collection). The physiognomy of the sitter and the composition of this portrait are found again in a drawing by Bernini in the Städel Musuem, Frankfurt (see A. Sutherland Harris, Selected drawings of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, New York, 1977, no. 33).

We are grateful to Dott. Francesco Petrucci for his assistance in cataloguing this lot (private communication, 9 December 2010).
