The present painting dates to circa 1618 by which time Janssens had moved away from Caravaggesque tenebrism of his earlier work towards classicism. Among the works from this period are, Diana and Nymphs (c. 1617; Kassel, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister) and Olympus (Munich, Alte Pinakothek). The monumental figure in this composition harkens back to examples from Renaissance Italy, while the still life elements show developments in Flanders by Janssens' contemporaries Osias Beert, Jacob van Hulsdonck and Frans Snyders, among others. A second version of Lascivia, in the Musée Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, lacks the still life elements found in the left of the present composition as well as the objects on the shelf beneath the mirror.
