Lot Essay

Von Alt depicted Vienna's main cathedral throughout his career and his views trace the construction and development of the surrounding area. For example, an early view from 1831 shows only a small, one-story building in front of the cathedral's tower, while what must be a later work shows several multi-story buildings crowding the Gothic tower (see W. Koschatzky and G. Koschatzky-Elias, Rudolf von Alt, Vienna, 2001, p. 148, fig. 34; p. 251, pl. 144).
