Lot Essay

White delft wine bottles were produced in quantities, often labeled for their contents: 'Sack', a yellowish white wine produced in the Canary Islands, similar to today's light sherry; 'Whit' or white wine; and 'Claret', a light red wine. Dates on 17th century examples range between 1621 and 1676, with over seventy percent dated between 1644 and 1652. For further information on this class of wares, see Louis L. Lipski and Michael Archer, Dated English Delftware, London, 1984, Chapter 5; John C. Austin, British Delft at Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia, 1994, nos. 3-8; and Michael Archer, Delftware, A Catalogue of the Collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum , London, 1997, pp. 268-271.
