Lot Essay

For a dish painted with the same subject but without the blue dash border, see an anonymous sale; Woolley and Wallis, Salisbury, 28 February 2006, lot 191. The scene may allude to the nursery rhyme mentioning a 'cat and fiddle' or possibly to the story of the 'Pied Piper of Hamelin'. The name is also often associated with publik houses and taverns.
