A varnished brass and black-patinated metal easel, by Raymond Subes, circa 1935

Working exclusively with wrought-iron, bronze and other metals, Raymond Subes exercised a mastery of his craft matched only by Edgar Brandt. A regular exhibitor at the Paris salons throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Subes delivered a diverse portfolio of works that furnished both private and public buildings, as well as the transatlantic ocean liners of the early 1930s. The present pair of easels, executed in brass, boldly display an architectural solemnity infused with elements of Cubism and Primitivism.

Travaillant exclusivement le fer forgé, le bronze et quelques autres métaux, Raymond Subes exerce son métier d'une main de maître, ayant comme seul égal Edgar Brandt. Il expose, tout au long des années 20-30, lors des salons, à Paris, plusieurs modèles destinés autant à des commanditaires privés, qu'à des administrations ou encore des compagnies transatlantiques. La paire de chevalets en bronze présentée dans cette vente, dévoile sa sensibilité pour l'architecture, à laquelle s'ajoute des influences cubistes et primitives.
