'Eau de Toilette Kantirix', a part-gilded glass perfume flacon, with gilt-bronze stopper, by Hector Guimard for Félix Millot, for the Exposition Universelle, 1900, the glass numbered and signed with the designer's and maker's marks, and with applied labels with the perfume and perfumer names.
For the 1900 Universal Exhibition, Hector Guimard, architect and decorator, built and decorated the pavillon for the Felix Millot Parfumerie, where three new perfume lines, 'Violi-Violette', 'Primialis', and 'Kantirix', were introduced. The public did not appreciate these avant-garde designs, and the perfume lines were quickly withdrawn with the market, which accounts for the extreme rarity of these flacons today. Because of the production difficulties that such unusually shaped flacons presented, and also because of the public's apathetic response of these perfume lines, the Art Nouveau style had a short and relatively insignificant impact on the perfume industry. However, the 'Kantirix' flacon -- with its irrational outline, its daring ornemantation, and the sensuality of its curves -- expresses the Art Nouveau aesthetic of this great artist with as much dynamism as his structures for the Parisian Métro or the Castel Béranger.
'Kantirix' is considered today to be the only flacon created in the true Art Nouveau high style.
