The polished pink gold rectangular case with push-piece, the hinged white gold cover with rectangular-cut sapphire, pink and yellow gold bird motifs of Native American design to the stylised sun and geometric detail, engraved to one side "Josef von Sternberg Hollywood", 1928, 10.5 x 7.7 x 1.0 cm., gross weight 222 grams, in a blue suede pouch, with French assay marks

Lot Essay

This cigarette case, created in 1928, was bought at Van Cleef & Arpels by the famous Austrian-American film director, Josef von Sternberg (1894-1969), in 1933. He offered it to the legendary German actress Marlene Dietrich with whom he collaborated on many films, the most well-known being "The Blue Angel" (1930).
