Lot Essay

Captain William Death commanded the Terrible and died in battle in 1756, the first year of the Seven Years War. His battles against the French were sited as examples of English courage and an English folk ballad titled 'Captain Death' was printed as early as 1783, lamenting the loss of the 'brave Captain Death'.
