HMS Ganges was commissioned in 1821 by Rear Admiral R. L. Bayes of the Royal Navy. Built in Bombay she served as a training ship from 1862 until 1976.

Castles Shipbreakers were situated on Baltic Wharf, Millbank and expanded to take on armoured wooden battleships in the 1870s.
