Lot Essay

Following the invasion of Jersey in 1781 by a French force of 700 men, a battle ensued in the town square of St. Helier with soldiers from the British garrison stationed in Elizabeth Castle, during which their commanding officer Major Peirson was killed. The original painting by John Singleton Copley (1738-1815) is in the Tate Gallery, London.
