As Martin Postle notes in his letter to the present owner dated 27 May 2010, there are relatively few copies of Reynolds' original painting Girl with a dead bird, principally because the two prime versions remained in private collections and were rarely exhibited in public. Postle suggests the present lot may have been an early copy after the original painting, either when it belonged to Reynolds or subsequently, for example when it was exhibited at the British Institution in 1817.
