The Cartier Archives have confirmed that this brooch was completed in December 1922. According to Judy Rudoe in her book "Cartier 1900-1939", the motif was borrowed from blue and white china plates of the Ming Dynasty, especially those dating to the 18th Century. The handle on the brooch, in particular, points to the style of vase depicted in the Ming porcelain.
