Artist's… Read more Antonie Marcel 'Toon' van Driel (b. 1945, The Netherlands) worked in advertising and as a steward with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines before he re-invented himself as a cartoon artist in 1973, creating the characters of 'F.C. Knudde' (Football Club Rubbish). The team, featuring the 'stars' Jaap, Dirk and Juan Jesus Castillo, grew legend over their absolute non-capacity to score in another goal than their own, as would be demonstrated in Algemeen Dagblad and over 30 albums. Another famous Toon creation is 'De Stamgasten', a series about crazy pub-going animals which also jumpstarted the solo careers of individual characters such as the clumsy lion 'Felis Leo' (Robbedoes magazine, mid-1980s) and the dirty joke-telling pink rabbit 'Ab Normaal' who, after stints at Yorin, RTL 5 and Veronica enjoys successes at the Dutch tv-channel Comedy Central. The following lots are acrylic on canvas renderings of some of his most successful characters, now for the first time offered at auction.
