Die 'Buste d'homme' ist im Jahr 2006 als Bronzeversion der gleichnamigen Gipsskulptur gegossen worden. Die ursprüngliche Gipsskulptur entstand 1956 und wurde im November 2010 bei Christie's in New York für 3.8 Millionen US-Dollar versteigert. Mit insgesamt zehn Abgüssen, alle im Jahr 2006 gefertigt, ist die Edition komplett. Neben den Abgüssen 1/8 bis 8/8 bestehen auch zwei Exemplare mit den Beschriftungen 'Fondation A.A. Giacometti' bzw. 'Alberto Giacometti Stiftung', die sich in der jeweiligen Sammlung in Paris bzw. Zürich befinden.
Als Modell für die 'Buste d'homme' diente dem Künstler sein jüngerer Bruder Diego. Diego tritt neben der Frau des Künstlers als häufigstes Modell im Werk Giacomettis auf. In der Frontalansicht bildet Diegos Brust eine massive Basis, einem felsigen Bergmassiv ähnlich, während ein verhältnismässig kleiner und schmaler Kopf den langgezogenen Hals ziert. In der Seitenansicht scheinen die Proportionen, auch wenn etwas in die Länge gezogen, natürlicher; Der Oberkörper gleicht einem dicken Mantel.
Die 'Buste d'homme' besitzt eine besonders charakteristische Provenienz, die sowohl in direkter als auch in historischer Verbindung mit Alberto Giacometti selbst steht. Sie stammt aus der Sammlung von Franz Meyer (1919-2007). Franz Meyer war von 1955 bis 1961 Direktor der Berner Kunsthalle und anschliessend Direktor des Kunstmuseums Basel sowie gleichzeitig Präsident der Alberto Giacometti-Stiftung in Zürich. Franz Meyer hatte im Jahr 1956 in der Kunsthalle Bern eine der ersten grossen Giacometti-Ausstellungen kuratiert. Die Retrospektive zeigte 46 Skulpturen, 23 Gemälde und 16 Zeichnungen. Sie wurde am 16. Juli eröffnet, gleichzeitig wie die XXVIII Biennale in Venedig, an welcher im französischen Pavillon eine Einzelausstellung Alberto Giacomettis gezeigt wurde. Genau in dieser Zeit erwarb Franz Meyer die Gipsskulptur 'Buste d'homme' von Alberto Giacometti.
Dem Werk liegt eine Expertise des Comité Giacometti, Paris, bei. Das Werk wird in den von der Fondation Alberto et Annette Giacometti in Vorbereitung stehenden Catalogue Raisonné aufgenommen.
The 'Buste d'homme' was poured in 2006 as a bronze version of the plaster sculpture of the same name. The original plaster sculpture originated in 1956 and was auctioned in November 2010 with Christie's New York for $3.8 million. The edition totals 10 casts, all of them made in 2006. In addition to casts 1/8 to 8/8, there is one inscribed 'Fondation A.A. Giacometti' and another inscribed 'Alberto Giacometti-Stiftung,' each in its respective permanent collection in Paris and Zurich.
As model for the 'Buste d'homme', served the younger brother of the artist, Diego. Along with the artist's wife, Diego appears as the most frequent model in the work of Giacometti. In the frontal view Diego's chest forms a solid basis, similar to a rocky mountain massif, adorned with a relatively small and narrow head with a long drawn out neck. In the side view the proportions seem, even though stretched out, more natural; the torso resembles a thick coat.

It originates from the collection of Franz Meyer (1919-2007). Franz Meyer was from 1955 to 1961 director of the Kunsthalle Bern and afterwards director of the Kunstmuseum Basel and simultaneously president of the Alberto Giacometti foundation in Zurich.
