Francois Hemony (ca. 1609-1667), originally from Lorraine, became clock- and gunmaker of the city of Amsterdam in 1655. The present lot was possibly originally made for the Bakenessertoren in Haarlem. Hemony signed a contract for casting a new carillon for this church in 1663. Records are showing this carillon was finished and installed October 1663. In 1795 large parts of this carillon were sold. A clock with identical inscription is illustrated in O. ter Kuile, Koper & Brons, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam 1986, p. 232, ill. 321.
