Lot Essay
Caroline Freeman, was the wife of Charles Freeman, the architect and surveyor who advised Millais on the purchase of his new house in Cromwell Place in 1861 and took charge of the necessary interior aterations.
On the reverse of the panel are pasted various letters:
'Memi to be attached to my Will Caroline Freeman I bequeath to my dear friend & Executor Edward Matthey my portrait painted by J.E. Millais R.A. and two water color sketches of Welsh Scenery by Halliday - written by me this day 10th Augt 1878 Caroline Freeman Witness Mary Anne Penn'.
'38 Blandford Square 31 March 1884 My dear Edward, The Millais portrait was painted in 1862 and given by Millais to my brother who was great friends with him. If you look carefully in the left hand bottom corner of the portrait, you will see, in blue paint, an inscription to Charles Freeman Esq from J.E.M. and the date. Always faithfully yours, Robert Freeman Edward Matthew Esq'.
'Marcus Stone R.A. informs me that the picture was exhibited in the Royal Academy 1862, no. 356 in catalogue of that year Jany 1898 EMatthey'.
