Lot Essay

Rhys Davies (1901-1978) was a Welsh novelist who was awarded an OBE in 1968. Davies first published stories appeared in New Coterie No. 2. Charles Lahr published the New Coterie between 1925-1927. He and his wife were close friends of Roberts who designed many of the frontispieces for the quarterly magazine. The present work and lots 24 and 25 appear to be original illustrations for these frontispieces. Roberts also drew the cover for Davies' first Novel.
