The present work forms a part of Frost's lace series. Frost has described the influence for his lace series in an interview with David Lewis, 'my mind went back to the boats, and I thought about how the brown mizzen sails at the stern are laced taut to keep the boat into the wind. So I glued two raw hessian shapes onto a canvas and I thought I could pull them tight by knocking holes through and lacing the forms with leather Army bootlaces' (D. Lewis, Terry Frost, Aldershot, 2000, p. 78).
