Meiji Period (late 19th century), both signed and sealed Yoshiharu
The rectangular writing box with rounded corners, the poem card box of slender, curved rectangular form, both with overhanging lids and decorated in varicolored gold and red hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, togidashi-e, kirikane and nashiji with motifs from the Hatsune (The First Warbler) chapter of the Tale of Genji, the exterior of the writing box decorated with a scene of the garden and the veranda of the Rokujo mansion with pine and plum trees in the garden, a pond by the mansion and a warbler in flight above, the interior decorated with a scene of pine and willow trees and a winding fence along the banks of a river, a bird in flight above, the poem card box decorated with a similar scene; each signed on underside of lid in gold and sealed in red lacquer
Writing box: 10 7/8 x 9¼ x 1¾in. (27.6 x 23.4 x 4.4cm); poem card box: 15 5/8 x 3 5/8 x 2in. (39.6 x 9.2 x 5cm.)
