Shrona Koti-karna was the only son of Balasena, and was tutored in the connoisseurship of textiles, real estate, lumber, jewels, elephants, horses and young men and women. Though his father set him up in a life of leisure, Balasena continued to work the fields until one day, Shrona asked his father why he continued to work so hard. Balasena told his son that without his hard work, their wealth would be exhausted. Shrona realized he needed to start contributing and asked his father for permission to take trade-goods and cross the great ocean. In the present relief, Shrona Koti-karna is depicted leaving India with his boyhood companions, the sons of two servants in his palace. For a full transliteration and translation of the story, see J. Tatelman, The Heavenly Exploits, vol. 1, 2005, p. 27-101.
