Tibet, 18th/19th century
The Karmapa seated on a lotus base over a throne with a table of offerings before him, wearing red and orange brocade robes and distinctive black hat, backed by a pink halo, with Vajrayogini Varahi above dancing over a prone figure, with the Tenth Shamar Rinpoche at top right and the Eighth Tai Situ at top left, Mahakala with Shri Devi astride a horse below, both backed by flaming toranas, all on a subtle landscape

Lot Essay

The Thirteenth Karmapa Dudul Dorje lived 1733-1797. Bernagchen Mahakala is the principle protector deity of the Karma Kagyu Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
