Lot Essay

The octagonal shape, size and carved lotus spray decoration of the present small dish can also be seen on a Dingyao dish dated to the Jin dynasty, 13th century, illustrated by M. Tregear, Song Ceramics, New York, 1982, p. 62, no. 45. Unlike the present dish, the sides are not lobed and the rim is not barbed. The two dishes are fine examples of the sharing of shapes, techniques and motifs at the various kilns during the Song and Jin dynasties.
