SONG DYNASTY (960-1279)
The incense burner with deep bowl rising to an everted rim, raised on a pedestal with narrowly fluted flange below the bowl and a pierced spreading foot; the sides and canted shoulder of the ewer divided into six lobes by double bow-string borders, applied with a leaf-shaped motif at the base of the strap handle and curved spout, the cylindrical cover surmounted by a seated lion; the cosmetic box raised on a flared foot and applied on the interior with three small cups separated by three curved stems of lotus pods issuing from a central pod, the slightly domed cover incised with a peony above the canted sides; all covered in clear glazes of pale olive tone
Incense burner 4 5/8 in. (11.7 cm.) high, ewer and cover 8¾ in. (22.2 cm.) high, cosmetic box and cover 3 1/8 in. (8 cm.) diam. (3)

Lot Essay

The ewer and cover are very similar to one shown with the bowl in which it would have sat, and dated Northern Song, illustrated in the exhibition, Two Thousand Years of Chinese Ceramics, Japan 1992, p. 56, no. 47.
