GUANGXU SIX-CHARACTER MARK IN GILDING AND OF THE PERIOD (1875-1908)
The globular body and tall waisted neck painted in gilding with a pattern of bats in flight amidst clouds, with a band of shou characters alternating with hibiscus sprays on the shoulder, with further hibiscus surrounding the nianhao on the base, all within decorative borders and reserved on a soft, bright blue ground

Lot Essay

Gilt-decorated blue-ground vases of this shape with Guangxu marks are found with varied auspicious decoration. A slightly larger vase (16¼ in.) similarly decorated with bats in flight amidst clouds, as well as a band of shou characters alternating with flowers on the shoulder and flower scroll surrounding the mark on the base, was sold in these rooms, 26 March 2010, lot 1432. Another vase (15¼ in.) decorated with small medallions of animals, shou characters and yin and yang motifs surrounded by the Eight Daoist Trigrams, is illustrated in National Museum of History: Major Holdings of the National Museum of History, Taipei, 1988, p. 72.
