Lot Essay

The shape and boss decoration of this unusual jade bead is based on late Eastern Zhou dynasty prototypes, such as the bead of more tapering form carved with a broad band of bosses, in the Winthrop Collection, illustrated by M. Loehr, Ancient Chinese Jades, Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, 1975, no. 498.
